The EAB Problem in the Wyoming Valley
The emerald ash borer has eliminated virtually all ash trees in northeastern Pennsylvania. In Luzerne County, thousands of ash trees in residential neighborhoods, along streets, and on properties are dead or actively dying.
The danger: ash wood becomes extremely brittle after death — faster than almost any other hardwood. A dead ash standing for 1-2 seasons can fail catastrophically in a moderate wind event. Trees that look stable from the ground may have extensive internal decay.
Identifying EAB-Affected Ash Trees
Crown die-back starting at the top.
S-shaped larval galleries under peeling bark.
D-shaped exit holes in the trunk.
Woodpecker activity on the bark (targeting EAB larvae).
Epicormic sprouts at the base (the tree's stress response).
Why Ash Removal Requires Care
Dead ash requires specific rigging and removal technique due to the brittleness of the wood. Limbs that look sound can break unexpectedly during the cut. Dave has removed extensive EAB-affected ash in Luzerne County and knows the specific approach these trees require.
